1st ODI : Afridi & Ajmal undo Aussies : Pakistan lead 1-0.

19 June, 2001 : Aussies went down fighting in reply to Pakistan's 291 at Trent Bridge, in a Natwest series one day match. That day, Waqar Younis captured 6 wickets in his 8 overs, giving away 59 runs which, until today, stood as the best bowling performance by a Pakistan bowler against Australia.22 April, 2009, today : Shahid Afridi snatched 6 wickets for just 38 runs to beat Waqar's record. Afridi bowled the perfect mix of leg-spinners & googlies that none of Australian batsman could handle with authority. 3 bowled, one caught by keeper, one at slip and Brad Haddin lofted it to short cover.. the first one. after playing several good shots against medium pacers.Saeed Ajmal tightened things up from other end, bowled his 10 overs for just 19 runs to go with 2 wickets. Ajmal, a rookie offspinner at International level but highly experienced in domestic circuit, justified his coach's strategy to spin off Aussies. Intikhab Alam, who interestingly was also the coach of Pakistan when they won cricket World cup in 1992, had anticipated Australians will fail against spinner in this 5 ODI series 'Chapal Cup' in Middle East.From 95/1, Australia slipped to 122/9 in just over 10 overs! James hopes called for batting powerplay, constructed a 45 run partnership with last batsman Ben Hilfenhaus to give Aussie bowlers something to bowl at. Not much chance of rain in Dubai anyway, but the extra large stand shades ensured people don't feel too much of sun in first innings and guess what? when night set in, everyone noticed there were no floodlights! instead, multiple lights sources (capable of over 3000 lux) are fitted into stand shades. Generally, cricket stadiums have 4 large towers of floodlights but Dubai stadium has a new innovation installed in itself!7th lowest total ever by Australia against Pakistan. Australia's smallest score against Pakistan in one day internationals is 120 which they made at Hobart in January 1997.. interestingly, none of Aussie batters made a duck today!

2nd ODI : Disciplined Aussies level series : 3 games to go.

When we talk discipline in cricket, what do we actually mean? one of aspect to judge discipline is number of extras conceded.Today, Australians were disciplined. Giving away only 3 extras (2 legbye & 1 'tight' no-ball) which now makes them only the 24th team ever to pick up all 10 wickets while giving away the least number of extras!Considering this was 5692nd innings off 2846 ODIs played till date, it was a remarkable bowling performance by Aussie side today in this second one day international of Chapal Cup 5 ODI series against Pakistan. Under pressure of play opposition spinners well, Australian side knew first they had to restrict other side for the smallest possible total. therefore, all Kangaroo bowlers put their head down to work today in association with some very inspirational fielding by one and all.Dubai pitch was slow the other day for first onedayer, and it got even more slower today if anything. Short pitched deliveries is another thing Aussie bowlers avoided today which Pakistani bowlers didn't and paid the price.Shahid Afridi, one of most unpredictable/impatient batters world cricket has ever seen, batted with predictability & patience today to make 41 off 40 balls after a slow 112 ball 57 from Salman Butt. Afridi's innings, coupled with Shoaib Akhtar's 14 ball 25 propelled Pakistan past 200 mark otherwise they would have scored even less.James Hopes + Shane Watson put on 77 for second wicket, providing solid foundation to Aussie chase of 208. Although Watson was foxed by a Saeed Ajmal flotter, Hopes continued his good form upto personal score of 48. This was incorrect from previous ICC rule where the batsman who comes in first into his crease was deemed not out.. as per new rule, if both batters reach same end while stumps are broken at other end, the batsman running to his partner's end is safe while his partner goes out, if he left his crease even for an inch!First win for Australia against Pakistan in UAE. Previous 4 Aus v Pak ODIs in Middle East (all at Sharjah) has brought only losses for team from down under!Shahzad Ahmed made his debut for Pakistan, becoming 172nd player to represent Pakistan in One day international cricket. Although, Shahzad, an opener, lasted for only 7 balls, scoring only 4 (one scoring shot!).

3rd ODI : Carelessness costs Pakistan : Aussies lead 2-1.

In cricket, how do you recover after losing 2 wickets of successive balls not once not twice but thrice? Most often, you won't. and neither did Pakistan team today even though they had only 199 as victory target.95 run opening partnership between Salman Butt and 17 year old Shehzad Ahmed, Pakistan had a dream start at a run-rate well over asking rate. Salman Butt was caught at slip off a spinning delivery from Nathan Hauritz while Ahmed, playing only his second game, was bowled by Michael Clarke on 40 after playing some promising shots.Captain Younis Khan, vetern Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi followed soon off careless shots as Pakistan fell from 95/0 to 123/5 inside 7 overs! Shoaib Mallik tried forming partnership with wicket keeper Kamran Akmal, then with Yasir Arafat, then tried Sohail Tanvir but no one stuck around with him long enough. Michael Clarke picked up 3 for 15 runs in his 6 overs while Andrew Symonds bowled 10 economical overs from other end to build pressure on home team. Nathan Hauritz, playing as main spinner of Aussie side, made his mark with figures of 10-3-25-2 which included prized wickets of opener Salman Butt and opposition captain Younis Khan.Earlier, Australians struggled their way to only 198, but more importantly, they lost only 7 wickets and played full quota of 50 overs. Consistent partnerships between openers, then Michael Clarke with youngster Callum Ferguson made sure Australians eat up enough delivery so that they post some respectable target. 4th ODI : Bollinger & Clarke seal series for Australia.

Almost 28 year old, over 50 first class games ~ the very first time Doug Bollinger represented Australia, he looked confident. sadly, no wickets in first innings and only 2 in second in his debut test match against South Africa on home ground Sydney in January 2009, Bollinger lost selectors faith for a while.But, no matter how much you sweep a real talent under the carpet, it will come back again and again. 4 months later, Doug Bollinger, in his debut one day international, went wicketless once again but today, in his second game for his country in colored clothings, Bollinger bamboozled Pakistani batsman with his accurate left arm swing bowling on a hot & sandy afternoon in Abu Dhabi.Pakistani batters failed to form any partnership of authority and their run rate always stayed low. run a ball 40 from Shahid Afridi and late heroics from Yasir Arafat sent Pakistan close to double hundred mark but a target of 198 was never going to trouble the visitors.3 world cups in a row, Australians know how to seize initiative and also how to sustain it. They had a horrifying start with a golden duck for Brad Haddin and only 1 run for Marcus North on his debut (both falling to Shaoib Akhtar), Australians found an eager pair in Shane Watson and Michael Clarke. captaining his side for the 10th time, Michael Clarke seemed hungry to seal the series in this 4th one day international itself, and so he did with an unbeaten century off 122 balls. From last 26 games, this was Pakistan's only 6th victory against Australia. (19 lost, 1 no result).Overall, Pakistan now trails 28-44 vs Australia in one day internationals.Clearly, asian giants have had a not-so-impressive record against team from down under, but today, they won a pretty good game of cricket. Opposite to a low scoring (century-less) series on dead UAE pitches that it was, which Aussies had already sealed with 3-1 lead going into this final onedayer, batsmen from both teams batted freely today and entertained the crowd.Electing to bat, Australians were off to solid start with Brad Haddin taking chances and Shane Watson setting his eyes in. 58 run opening partnership was broken bY Shoaib Akhtar while Marcus North's wicket was claimed by Saeed Ajmal. Australia down to 83 for two wickets, in form captain Michael Clarke joined Watson and formed a another half century partnership in the middle overs. Watson completed his century, a rather slow one as per his nature, but his 3rd half century partnership, this time with Callum Fergusson, took Australia past 250 run mark.Chasing the biggest target of series, Pakistan were 2 wickets down for 46 and then 3 down at 56 run mark but then, Misbah-ul-Haq settled in to form 198 run partnership with Kamran Akmal who played all the shots in book and with lots of authority.
